The Science Based Targets Network ****is encouraging businesses worldwide to contribute to nature recovery by reducing impact, regenerating and restoring ecosystems, and transforming business models. This happens across the value chain, and is driven by setting customised targets. Nature follows SBTi
You can find out more about the SBTN and about setting targets with this slide deck.
The SBTN has already made initial guidance for setting targets. While it is not fully complete, there is more than enough content to get started with, and many businesses around the world have already been using this guidance. It's our job just to support businesses to understand how to follow it.
The TNFD focuses on disclosing nature-related risks and opportunities, whereas SBTN is about setting goals and action plans for becoming nature positive.

SBTN have convened regional working groups around the world led by their partners.
We're putting together a diverse group from NGOs, consultancies, advocacy groups, and businesses that are sustainability leaders across New Zealand and Australia to assist businesses in setting targets for nature. This collaborative approach is designed to capture a broad network and ensure sustainability.
Business Councils, Peak Bodies and similar are important to have on board as they could act as nodes to share information and may wish to invite member companies who are particularly interested and could share case studies.
Our plan is to raise awareness about the science based targets for nature, to then build the capacity of those interested to ultimately set and achieve targets for nature. We're just looking at Aotearoa and Australia, and have flexibility to do what works best for us.
Currently, leading companies in Aotearoa and Australia are exploring the ways that their nature accounting might work, but most companies are not ready to set targets at the level required by the SBTN - that’s our goal to change!
